The Commission has also released an Occasional Paper which provides a broad overview of its report on the distribution of GST revenue in 2022-23 (the 2022 Update). See: https://www.cgc.gov.au/publications/occasional-paper-5-gst-distribution-states-and-territories-2022-23
The Commonwealth Grants Commission provides independent advice to the Australian Government on the distribution of the GST to the states and territories. Australia’s GST distribution arrangements are governed by relevant legislation and seek to provide the states and territories with a similar fiscal capacity to provide services. The Commission’s recommendations for the distribution of GST revenue take into account the different revenue raising capacities of the states and territories and differences in their costs to provide services.
